What to do for heartburn relief ?
My wife and I are kind of familiar with heartburn, her more than me tough.
We try to eat better every day, stay away from junk food, etc. But sometimes you just go for it and you pay the price.
On her side, it is worst. It wakes her up in the middle of the night with that bitter taste in the mouth and her throat is on fire.
You can always take that pink liquid. But it is just a band-aid on the wound.
We are more on the natural way of treating thing by changing our diet or focusing on specific food and habits.
If it is still ongoing and getting worst , we will consult,as it can be a possible case of G.E.R.D. (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).
So, let’s see what we can do!

Heartburn is an irritation of the esophagus, the tube that connects your throat and stomach. It’s caused by stomach acid.
It is an uncomfortable burning feeling in your chest,up your upper belly or below your breastbone, that can move up your neck and throat. This can be a symptom of many conditions, including acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and even pregnancy.
When you are experiencing heartburn, you may also have a bitter or sour taste in the back of your throat. Heartburn can last from a few minutes to several hours. It often feels worse after you eat or when you lay down too quickly after eating.
GERD is caused by frequent acid reflux.
When you swallow, a circular band of muscle around the bottom of your esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter) relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow into your stomach. Then the sphincter closes again.
If the sphincter relaxes abnormally or weakens, stomach acid can flow back up into your esophagus. This constant backwash of acid irritates the lining of your esophagus, often causing it to become inflamed.

Conditions that can increase your risk of GERD include:
- Bulging of the top of the stomach up into the diaphragm (hiatal hernia)
- Connective tissue disorders, such as scleroderma
- Delayed stomach emptying
Let’s go through some Symptoms/Causes.
1. Chest Pain
Pain in the chest and possibly the throat are the most common signs of heartburn. Often, people find belching or drinking a glass of cold milk or water relieves these symptoms. Although milk may offer temporary relief by neutralizing stomach acid, it can also stimulate further acid production. In the long run, this can make the symptoms worse. If the pain continues or often recurs, it is best to speak to a doctor about other treatments or to explore other causes.
2. Long-Lasting Pain
Heartburn pain lasts for several minutes to several hours, depending on the gastrointestinal health of the person, and the factors that contributed to the event. Someone who has a weak lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that separates the stomach from the esophagus, is more likely to experience prolonged heartburn. A weak sphincter is less effective at keeping stomach acid out of the esophagus.
3. Pain Begins After Eating or Drinking (Find the trigger!)
The foods and drinks that set off a heartburn attack vary from person to person. Some of the most common culprits are alcohol, spicy foods, citrus fruit, tomatoes, chocolate, and drinks containing caffeine. These substances lower the pressure at the esophageal sphincter that guards against acid backtracking from the stomach into the esophagus. If someone regularly gets chest or throat pain after consuming a specific food or drink, it is likely a trigger for them.
4. Varied Severity of Pain
Not only do different people experience different severity of heartburn symptoms, but the same person may also experience variations in severity depending on many factors. People with existing health concerns involving their gastrointestinal system are likely to experience heartburn more severely, and it may fluctuate depending on the current state of their condition.
5. Right After Taking Medication
Anti-inflammatory medications can cause heartburn by irritating the stomach lining. Antidepressants and other medications can relax the lower esophageal sphincter that keeps acid in the stomach. If a person believes their medication is causing their heartburn, he or she should speak to a doctor .
Smoking is another activity that can prompt episodes of heartburn. Inhaling cigarette smoke often prompts the swallowing of air, as well. This swallowed air relaxes the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve responsible for preventing acid from backing up out of the stomach. Smoking also increases the production of stomach acid, thereby worsening symptoms. It can also damage the lining of the esophagus.
7. Health Conditions
Heartburn is the primary symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Studies show that the likelihood of heartburn due to GERD increases in people with other health issues. Asthma is one of the best-known examples. People who are overweight, obese, or pregnant are also more likely to experience heartburn.
Overeating or over drinking is a common cause of heartburn, especially when the foods and drinks in question are known triggers. People who eat too much of food that irritates the stomach, or consume it too quickly, may have heartburn afterward. Likewise, a person who skips breakfast and lunch and eats a heavy dinner is more likely to experience heartburn.
Heartburn pain often occurs after bedtime if a person eats a large meal and goes to bed shortly after. This scheduling gives the stomach too little time to digest the meal before lying prone. The position makes it easier for acid to wash back into the esophagus because it no longer needs to fight gravity to do so. This particular trigger can be avoided by leaving at least two hours between consuming food and going to bed.
10. A bitter taste
Many heartburn patients notice an unpleasant sour or bitter taste in the mouth during a heartburn episode. The regurgitated stomach acid backing up into the esophagus is the cause of both this symptom and the burning sensation at the back of the throat. Sometimes, more acid enters the esophagus than the tract can handle, and the liquid moves higher, into the throat and mouth.
Even tough this condition can be treated with medication(s), or surgery on a more serious way.
Like I mentioned earlier, if you can use a natural way to relieve the symptoms, it is always better ..THAT IS MY OPINION !
So, here is a list . (it can be probably longer) of some ingredients and natural products,that can be an alternative to be tried before all the medication.( Sorry! I am not a pill guy)
Apple Cider Vinegar
Although it might appear ironic, apple cider vinegar is believed to help relieve symptoms of acid reflux as it is often caused by an individual not having enough acid in their digestive tract. Apple cider vinegar is also highly effective against numerous types of bacteria and has anti-microbial properties, as this home remedy helps to balance the stomach’s pH levels by neutralizing its stomach acid.
Easy to incorporate into a diet, apple cider vinegar can be used in dressings, marinades, soups, desserts, and teas, or a patient can take one to two tablespoons to help relieve their acid reflux and to benefit their overall health. Due to it’s strong, acidic taste, try diluting it with water or honey to make it more palatable for your taste buds as well.
Rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, turmeric boosts incredible health benefits as it is recognized as an alternative therapy for many gastrointestinal issues, such as acid reflux. Its most active ingredient, curcumin, is believed to have antiviral, antibacterial, and anticancer properties, leading to turmeric becoming recognized as an alternative therapy for heartburn, inflammation, and stomach ulcers.
One study concluded that acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) might be caused by inflammation and oxidative stress and that GERD and acid reflux may be treated with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, such as turmeric.
Bananas are rich in potassium, making them an excellent natural remedy for reducing acidity. Potassium assists in keeping the acid levels in the stomach at a reasonable level.
Mint leaves are known for their digestive properties. They reduce the acid content in the stomach while improving overall digestion. Mint also has a soothing, cooling effect on the body, which alleviates the discomfort associated with heartburn.
Try putting mint leaves in a teapot kettle for homemade mint tea. Also, try it in cold water with lemon with a mint lemonade.
Tulsi leaves are an excellent natural remedy to reduce acidity. They assist in soothing acid reflux by stimulating the stomach to produce more mucous and they also have significant anti-ulcer properties. These help in reducing the effects of gastric acids. Try chewing tulsi leaves for a few minutes or incorporating them into a herbal tea and watch the symptoms disappear. Consider using a french press for making the perfect tea.
If you are suffering from painful and uncomfortable heartburn caused by acid reflux, baking soda is one of the best natural remedies. This compound drastically reduces the discomfort associated with acid reflux by neutralizing the acids in the stomach. Try mixing half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.
However, drinking baking soda is not recommended for regular use but only in moments of pain or discomfort caused by acid reflux.
Ginger root is one of the best foods for aiding digestion. It helps to reduce the symptoms of stomach acidity by assisting in the production of mucous in the stomach lining. For immediate relief, try chewing on a piece of ginger root and swallow the juice extracted from the ginger. Do not eat the ginger root itself. Also, try adding a piece into a blender for an excellent smoothie.
Buttermilk can be bought at the supermarket or made at home. It contains lactic acids that assist in neutralizing the acidity of the stomach. By drinking a few glasses, you can drastically reduce the symptoms. Try adding cinnamon powder for the ultimate heartburn reliever. Plus, it also helps make the buttermilk taste way better.
Basil leaves reduce acid reflux and also have anti-ulcer properties. Similar to bananas, they assist in stimulating the stomach to produce more mucous for its lining. This results in more protection for the stomach from acid buildup. Try chewing basil leaves when suffering from heartburn to ease discomfort. Basil leaves can also be brewed in a hot cup of water or by adding it to herbal lemon tea. If a sweetener is required, try adding raw honey.
Cinnamon is full of health benefits. It acts as an antacid by getting rid of gastric gasses in the stomach. Try adding half a teaspoon of cinnamon in herbal tea and let it steep for a few minutes. By drinking cinnamon tea a few times a day or when experiencing heartburn, you will help prevent this from occurring by maintaining the health of the digestive system. Also, try mixing cinnamon powder into cereal, oatmeal, juices or smoothies to change it up.
What to do for heartburn relief ?
It is not a good to feel like there is boiling acid coming up your throat…
You got to take care of it. If it goes out of control and its too frequent consult your GP.
It can be something more serious!
