What to use on extremely dry skin ?
Not that I really have major problems with dry skin, but working as a fiber optic technician, always dealing with some chemicals and most of it being,99% isopropyl alcohol. My skin get a little bit of a beating after a day of work and on a long run.
My wife, is noticing it more than me when I come home…
Good thing, because me, I would just continue on with the rest of my day.
I have to admit ! She is right, my skin gets really dry and cracked… Age is a factor too…but that is another story 😉
Let’s Have A deeper Look!
First Thing First
When your skin is dry, it means you’re exposing it to elements that are damaging skin cells faster than your body can repair them.
A physical exam and medical history, including when your dry skin started,is a good way to begin. Which factors makes it better or worse, your bathing habits, your diet, and how you care for your skin.
Maybe some tests, to check whether your dry skin is the result of an underlying medical condition, such as an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). So your doctor would have a good idea of what to use on extremely dry skin like yours and give you some medication or any specific treatment if needed.
In most cases, dry skin responds well to lifestyle measures.
Dry Skin Lifestyle
The following measures can help keep your skin moist and healthy:
Moisturize. Moisturizers provide a seal over your skin to keep water from escaping. Apply moisturizer several times a day and after bathing. Thicker moisturizers work best. You may also want to use cosmetics that contain moisturizers. If your skin is extremely dry, you may want to apply an oil, such as baby oil, while your skin is still moist.
Use warm water and limit bath time. Long showers or baths and hot water remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower to five to 10 minutes and use warm, not hot, water.
Avoid harsh, drying soaps. It’s best to use cleansing creams or gentle skin cleansers and bath or shower gels with added moisturizers. Choose mild soaps that have added oils and fats. Avoid deodorant and antibacterial detergents, fragrance, and alcohol.
Gloves. Hands tend to experience the most direct contact with environmental irritants. These include dish soap and laundry detergent.
Get in the habit of wearing gloves when your hands are in water. Your hands also take a lot of abuse when temperatures drop and you’re working outside in the cold. Wearing insulated gloves can cut down on dry, irritated skin.
Apply moisturizers immediately after bathing. Gently pat your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains. Within a couple of minutes of bathing, apply moisturizing cream or ointment to trap moisture in your skin.
A product in which petrolatum is one of the top three ingredients may be best. Products containing glycerin, lactic acid or urea may also help.
Use a humidifier. Hot, dry, indoor air can parch sensitive skin and worsen itching and flaking. A portable home humidifier or one attached to your furnace adds moisture to the air inside your home. Be sure to keep your humidifier clean.
Sitting by the fireplace, spending time in chlorinated or chemically-treated water, can irritate your skin and make it feel dry too.
Dry skin might be connected to the clothes you’re wearing or what you’ve exposed your skin to.
Choose fabrics that are kind to your skin. Natural fibers, such as cotton and silk, allow your skin to breathe. But wool, although natural, can irritate even normal skin.
Wash your clothes with detergents without dyes or perfumes, both of which can irritate your skin.
Time for a Visit
If dry skin causes itching, apply cool compresses to the area. To reduce inflammation, use a non-prescription hydro cortisone cream or ointment, containing at least 1 percent hydro cortisone. If these measures don’t relieve your symptoms or if your symptoms worsen, see your doctor or consult a dermatologist.

Coconut oil: Coconut oil has emollient properties. Emollients fill the spaces between skin cells, creating a smooth surface. That’s why the saturated fatty acids that occur naturally in coconut oil can hydrate and smooth the skin.
Petroleum jelly: Petroleum jelly products can heal skin in older adults.It is also known as mineral oil, covers the skin in a protective layer. It traps moisture underneath. This helps heal dry, irritated skin patches.
Oatmeal baths: Oatmeal is common folk remedy for irritated skin. Since ancient Roman times, people have been using oatmeal for skin care. Today, special oatmeal formulations are used in a variety of skin care products, from lotions to bath soap.
Antioxidants & Omega-3:There are some foods that can help your skin appear healthier.Food rich in antioxidants can minimize damage from toxins and help your body make healthy cells.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, may also contribute to a glowing-skin diet.
It’s important to preserve healthy skin. Your skin is the first line of defense against bacteria and viruses.
When your skin is compromised by itching, an infection can occur. You may want to incorporate a good moisturizer into your daily routine, even when your skin isn’t bothering you.
In fact, maintaining a healthy skin barrier daily is one of the best ways to prevent outbreaks of dry skin. Another essential skincare tip is to use a moisturizing sunscreen every day to prevent skin damage and dryness.
Make sure to wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing that draws sweat away from the skin when you’re exposed to high temperatures or skin-irritating conditions. Remember that extremely dry skin can be an indication of a more serious condition.
If home remedies aren’t helping, you may need to see a doctor to get a prescription treatment to relieve your dry skin.
